It was an honour for me to judge the first time in Denmark the Cairn Terriers at International dog show in Bjerringbro. The show organization was excellent. I had 36 entries and it was a pleasure to see so many in excellent condition and showing well.
General impression of the breed was excellent: dogs in general were well balanced, well proportioned and showing good type (that is most important for me), many with excellent heads and a lot of them with excellent movement. More attention should be paid to quality of coat, which should be weather-resistant. According to the present standard, which should be a strict guide for the breeders and judges, the population of dogs I judged, is in general 5 cm too tall. For centuries the Cairn has been a small kind of hound, with rough hair, made use of to force the fox or the badger out of their holes as it was written by Goldsmith in 1774. 40 years ago standard was asking for 9 to10 ins (24 to 25,5 cm) at withers.
My BOB and BOS Cairns are both of excellent type and were in excellent condition. The winning bitch is well balanced with excellent proportioned body. I would like a bit firmer back. The winning dog has a beautiful head, he is strong with muscular limbs, well balanced and with excellent movement. Obviously he should be smaller. Congratulations to the winners.
The main problem in the Cairn Terriers is the overall size. Great attention should be paid not to have so oversized dogs in general. That could be done in only few generations. I like the excellent typical expression, overall confirmation and excellent movement in the breed in Denmark. Congratulate to the breeders for breeding high quality dogs.
Finally I must say I really enjoyed my time in Denmark judging the Cairns. Many thanks to the organizers for their hospitality and to all exhibitors for their excellent presentation of their dogs in the show ring.
